Bucharest is the largest aviation hub in the region and a practical alternative to the Polish airports for groups from western Ukraine, Bukovina especially.
The airport and the road
Henri Coandă International sits at Otopeni, about 16 km north of Bucharest. It is Romania’s main international airport, so the choice of flights is wider than at Chișinău.
The shortest way from Ukraine runs through Bukovina. From Chernivtsi the drive takes roughly 8 to 10 hours; from Kyiv it is considerably longer, so groups from central Ukraine should weigh this against the Polish route before committing.
Worth knowing in advance
- Romania is an EU member and, since 1 January 2025, fully in the Schengen area including its land borders. The Ukrainian border here is therefore an external Schengen border, with everything that follows from it.
- Passports must remain valid for at least three months beyond the planned return date.
- Minors need a separate set of documents, agreed in advance.
- Starlink runs throughout, so check-in can be done on board.

Why Bucharest rather than Kraków?
The wider choice of long-haul flights. If you are flying within Europe, compare it with Cluj-Napoca first, which is considerably closer. Did anything change when Romania joined Schengen?
Yes. Since 2025 the Ukraine–Romania border is an external Schengen border, while inside the EU there are no longer land border checks on Romania’s frontiers.
